6.3.22 Update from Superintendent Chaplik
Posted on 06/03/2022

Sultan School District Families,

I want to update you on a few items as we approach the end of the school year. First, we want to congratulate our Class of 2022 on their achievements! These students have faced significant adversity over the last two years and we are so proud of their tenacity and drive. Please join us in celebrating our graduates as they transition into their next adventures! Graduation will be celebrated on Saturday, June 11 at 6:00 pm at the stadium. Please follow all guidelines so this event runs smoothly and the focus is on our graduates.

New Turf Field

The new field turf has been installed and the work is complete. We will continue to update levy projects in real-time with video and anecdotal information as the projects unfold. This link will take you to our website and the levy page where the information can be found.

Sky Valley Transportation Cooperative

The project will go out to bid on June 23rd and will remain open until bids are read on July 20th. We are excited to get this process going and move our transportation operations into the new facility. The Co-op will be built on the piece of property that is next to the Sultan Cemetery and south of the new fire station. We will continue to provide updates via our website as progress unfolds and we will also add a live camera feed for real-time progress. It is important to remember that the two levies that were passed in April will not begin collection until 2023. The current levies in place expire in December of 2022. To bridge the timeline gap, we will be working with Snohomish County on a loan to fund the project upfront while being very careful to not accrue any unnecessary interest. There is no prepayment penalty on the loan that we will take out.

WASA Awards

We were thankful to attend the WASA Region 109 Awards which resumed after a pause during the pandemic. These awards grant Districts an opportunity to publicly recognize employees and community members for their leadership. While many employees and community members have stepped up repeatedly over the years to contribute to the success of the Sultan School District, SHS Teacher Brandi Varnell and community member Heidi Dawson went above and beyond over the last few years. I nominated Brandi Varnell for the Student Leadership Award and Heidi Dawson for the Community Leadership Award. I am thankful to have the opportunity to lead this District alongside so many wonderful people like Brandi and Heidi! Please visit our website to learn more about their awards HERE.

Washington State Audit Results

We just completed our annual audit and are happy to report that there were no deficiencies or material weaknesses in our financial statements or federal awards nor did we have any findings in our federal programs, financial statements, or federal awards/questioned costs. Our staff works with integrity each day and especially when responding to audit requests and providing documents. Our clean audit results are a result of our commitment to sound financial practices and it feels good to be recognized by the State for our efforts.

Community Meet up in Gold Bar on June 16th

Our next community meet-up is scheduled for Thursday, June 16th from 6-8 pm at the Prospectors in Gold Bar, WA. Your Gold Bar School Board member, Byron Kindle, will be there along with Board Chair Russ Sumpter and myself to answer any questions you might have. We are working to have a Spanish interpreter available for translating and we hope to see you there!

VOA Sky Valley Seniors and Community Members Coffee Group

I have been fortunate to meet with a group of active community members who gather each week to connect. I have immensely appreciated attending their meetings and improving communication and relationships. This week, we took a group of community members who regularly attend these meetings on a bus ride (field trip) up to Gold Bar Elementary for an informational tour. We had a great time talking about educational experiences and connecting with staff and students. I am thankful for this active group and how much they care about the community.
